Technology

The ConocoPhillips E-Gas™ technology is proven as one of the cleanest, most efficient commercial processes for converting coal or petroleum coke into a synthesis gas (syngas).  The syngas can be transformed into natural gas or used in refining, power generation and chemical applications.

With more than 20 years of proven commercial experience, this technology provides a highly efficient, environmentally superior and competitive alternative.

Advantages of E-Gas™ Technology

The E-Gas™ technology features a unique and efficient two stage design that accommodates a wide range of feedstocks including bituminous coals like those mined in Kentucky as well as lower-rank coals and petroleum coke.  The equipment footprint is compact and lower cost than competing technologies.  A unique dry-solids filtration system avoids water contamination issues associated with other technologies.  Additionally, the process incorporates a proprietary low sulfur start-up process which lowers emissions.  An exclusive slag removal system eliminates the need for any lock-hoppers in the facility and the fugitive emissions associated with those devices.  Finally, the E-Gas heat recovery system facilitates ample production of power for the facility and the mine, thus eliminating air emissions that would otherwise result from off-site power generation.

E-Gas™ Technology in Action

Long considered one of the cleanest coal-fueled power plants in the world, the Wabash River Project, which employs the E-Gas technology, was selected by the Department of Energy in September 1991 as a CCT Program Round IV demonstration project.   Wabash was the first Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant in the United States.  Construction began in July 1993 and the facility reached commercial operation in November 1995.  The DOE demonstration phase was completed in January 2000, and the facility continues to operate as a 262 MW baseload unit serving the electricity needs of Indiana.
